Bible Verse: You must follow the Lord your God and fear him. You must keep his commands and listen to him; you must worship him and remain faithful to him. Deuteronomy 13:4 CSB
Scripture Reading: Matthew 16:24-28
You shall follow the Lord your God. In fact, the theme of following and obeying God is found throughout the entire scriptures. However, it seems like many men have become content with just believing in God. But I don’t think the Bible says “just believe” when we put everything into context.
I remember having a conversation with a very well-known pastor a few years ago. We were talking about how the theology of “just believe” became popular. When we just teach that part of the scriptures, we miss the obeying and lordship part of how we are supposed to live. We discussed the modern-day crusades, which saw many people come up to the front of the stage to respond to the Gospel. They would be told, “You just have to believe,” without much emphasis on the discipleship and lordship part of the Christian life.
You cannot separate the “just believe” and “follow” part of the Christian walk. They must go hand-in-hand if you are making the decision to give your life to Christ.
In fact, if you look at the Gospels, you see many people made a choice to follow Jesus, and then over time, they came to believe he was the son of God. We even see this with Peter, when Jesus asks him, “Who do you say I am?” after he was following Jesus for years.
Have you separated the believing part of God from the following God part? As we look at some practical aspects of our lives over the next few days, I want you to look at your day-to-day life and see if it reflects God’s lordship as well as believing in him.
